And now, a few indispensible tricks from The Gentleman’s Guide to Life – a highly useful and totally hilarious book by Steve Friedman, a former GQ senior editor, award-winning sportswriter and one of the most brilliant, charming and well-shaved guys we know.
- “If you’re a blade man (about 70 percent of you are), shave after you shower. The hot water and steam soften your beard. (A new generation of fog-proof mirrors makes shaving while you shower a viable alternative.)
- When you’re lathered and ready, start at the sideburns and make short strokes in the direction of your beard’s growth. The neck follows the cheeks, and the upper lip and chin come last. That’s because whiskers there are the thickest and you want to give them the most time to soften up under all the foam.
- Once you’re done, don’t forget to wash… You’ve just removed an entire layer of dead skin… and spread a bunch of bacteria around your kisser. So wash up. And slap on some aftershave. No, no, not the stuff that feels like battery acid and smells like eau de Adman. That’s the old-fashioned, alcohol-based stuff that tightens your pores and dries out your skin. These days, aftershave is all about moisturizing and healing, rather than “stings like hell.” Even the products that contain alcohol also usually have moisturizer.
- If you’re one of the 10 percent of American men who suffer from razor burn, and you can’t face the prospect of a beard, be gentle. Easy does it. If the shave isn’t close enough for your taste, try shaving twice, but gently. On days when burn is really bad, buy an over-the-counter ointment with 1 percent hydrogen peroxide.”
Steve adds that if you have money to burn, you should go to The Art of the Shave barber shop in New York. “There’s no closer shave,” he says. “Also, use one of the new, quadruple-head, vibrating razors from Gillette [available at Wal-Mart, Kmart and Drugstore.com]. You’ll never want to use a regular blade again.”

I’m loving this look. Not only does it have an utterly romantic quality, it’s also modern and fresh. Better yet, this type of lush, jewel-like lip stain works as a great counterpoint to all the pale, blush-tone colors around this season. (Note: It looks especially excellent when paired with clear skin, lightly defined eyes and a touch of mauve blush.)
Oh, and did I mention how easy it is?
- Blend a little concealer under your eyes, around your nose and anywhere else you need it: When you wear any bold lip color, it’s important that your skin look glowing and even.
- Dab on fuchsia lipstick and blot it with a tissue. Repeat till you reach the desired depth of color.
- Top with clear or pink balm or gloss to soften the effect.
Here’s the pretty shade that makes it all happen for me:
So: What hot lip color are you craving for spring?

How are we feeling about men and jewelry? The only thing I find universally acceptable are watches, a ring passed down from a grandfather or a thin silver or gold band, and anything leather and surfer-y. Other than that, no way. And I mean, really no way.
And yet: I take it all back, sort of, in the case of Mickey Rourke: Dog charms! Non-functional belt chains! Sherlock Holmes pocket-watch fobs! Random leather knots! He looks fantastic and it kills me to say it, but all that bling makes his look.

I’ll admit it, I’m a sucker for headbands and hair wraps. There’s nothing like adding some detail to complete your look like an intricate headpiece to really make you stand out from the crowd. While most people envision a headband as this basic glossy plastic contraption you put in your hair, the headbands from Andrea’s Beau are simply amazing. They’re cute, hip, colorful — and will definitely add another dimension to your look. They’ve even got something for everyone (well, I guess not everyone — sorry guy’s).
In case you missed my previous entry on headbands, be sure to check it out. If you visit Andrea’s Beau and enter myfashioncents in the comments section upon checkout, you can save 20% off your order (savings reflected on your credit card statement) until the end of May with this exclusive offer.
What’s your obsession? Leave me a comment.

The fact that net-a-porter.com is known as the fashion editors’ favorite website should come as no surprise: It’s the brainchild of a brilliant and glamorous… fashion editor (Natalie Massenet, shown here). Fans speak with hushed reverence about the site’s occasional sales, so I had to cheer when I saw that net-a-porter has officially launched its long-awaited, bargain-minded sister site: theOutnet.com – which offers the same peerless, inventive style at up to 80% off. It’s a thrilling source for inspiration… and the occasional splurge.
