Western music video styling tricks

“I’m hoping you have some western wear ‘fashioncents’ for me. My daughter is a singer and makes western music videos. For the next video she needs a western look involving a red satin gown and another with poncho.  I must find the outfits quickly but don’t know where to shop. Please don’t send me to costume stores because the ”look” has to be modern.”

First, let me say that you sound like an awesome mother. Secondly, your instincts are right on the money: While the fashion scene is always whirling and evolving, the western theme remains a constant. There are plenty of designers and artists out there spinning a brilliant modern-western look. My advice:

  1. Think Ralph Lauren:

  2. Think Hermes:

  3. Think Sheryl Crow — whose new line of clothes, Bootheel Trading Co., just came out at Dillards.

  4. In short, think cowboy boots (from Shoebuy.com and Saks Fifth Avenue are good sources) and hats and belts with big buckles, and mix them into your look sparingly. Ponchos can be found at most vintage stores, as well as Viva Terra and Alpaca Direct.
  5. Red satin gown? Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Victoria’s Secret. Add a conch belt and/or a felt hat and you’re there!

What do you say? Any other western MTV style tips that I left out?

Lots of love,
