The latest addition to the ever expanding M.J. empire is the recession-friendly basics line Jacob by Marc Jacobs, which hit stores this past week. Everything—with the exception of a set of straw fedoras—is under $100, including a cashmere sweater, some playfully bright bangles, even a leather-trimmed tote. But as much as I love the idea of accessible Marc Jacobs, I’m still a little torn over just how wide this designer can spread himself and still feel fresh and innovative. I mean, a T-shirt can be anywhere from $10 to $1000 depending on which level you want to shop at. What do you think?

I agree. Sometimes I think designers devalue their main line by putting out value lines. Yes, it makes the fashions more accessible to us normal people, but it has to have a negative effect on the overall perceived value of the more exclusive lines.
