The “no white before Memorial Day” rule – outdated?

June 4th // 6 Comments

Memorial Day has come and gone and now it’s officially appropriate to wear white. I’ve never personally adhered to this “rule” – there are countless posts on the blog about winter whites, etc. – but I know quite a few people who do. Why try to cram it all in before Labor Day? This beautiful, clean shade works year round!

Do you follow the “no white before Memorial Day or after Labor Day” rule?

Just like good manners never go out of fashion, so it is that white ACCESSORIES should be worn during the summer [between Memorial Day and Labor Day]. If your circle of associations aren’t within the ones where this matters and is followed, then–of course–anything goes.

No way! Whatever color that matches my outfit/ style concept well for whichever day, is what I’m wearing. I don’t subsribe to “fairy tales”. :)

I still keep the rule..it paralells the seasons where I live: it gets cold starting in September and stays that way until early April so I tend to wear dark colors during those months. Between East and Memorial Day it usually begins to be so warm during the day that white seems like a fun, airy color to wear. But when I buy that house in Miami all bets are off…I’ll wear what ever I want whenever I want!

  4. These were the rules since I was a little girl and I won’t tell how long ago that was, but I don’t think it’s really the rule anymore. I think it was more of a northern rule, due to season change. It doesn’t work for Florida, we wear white all year around. White is beautiful to wear.

This was almost an unwritten LAW when I was growing up. I have no idea where it came from but I don’t think anyone follows that anymore….do they??
