7 Tips for Organizing Your Closet

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to mean scrubbing the entire house. Why not start with one room, probably the smallest in your house – the closet. Here are some tips for getting you started:

Think ‘Less is More’

Jill Martin, the author of ‘The Weekend Makeover’ says that, “Most people only wear 25% of what they own. To make your closet look uniform and neat, you should have to pare down. You should always feel like a ‘10’, so only keep ‘10s’ in your closet!” Take time to go through your closet and get rid of things you honestly don’t wear – perhaps list it on Poshmark?

Store Jewelry in Clear Drawers

Storing your jewels in clear drawers allows you to separate the pieces by type: earrings, necklaces, rings, the whole bit. Since the drawers are clear, you’ll be able to actually see where everything is and not scramble through a messy jewelry box.

Install Proper Lighting

Being able to see all your clothes is key if you’re really going to get great use out of this small space. Instead of forgetting about that amazing dress in the back corner, install proper lighting that sheds light on every piece  you have waiting to be worn. Battery-powered lights that adhere to the wall are a simple, affordable option that can be found at Target or any hardware store.

Don’t Hang Everything

Your workout tees probably don’t exactly ‘need’ a hanger, right? Decide if your casual clothes like tanks and tees can be folded to better use the space available in your closet. Folding tees, sweaters and lingerie actually preserves their shelf life and prevents them from getting stretched out by hangers.

Coordinate Your Hangers, Drawers, + Bins

This is the easiest way to add an element of organization to your closet. By pairing all your bins, hangers, and drawers in the same color or similar styles, you create a uniform space that works as a blank canvas to showcase all your pretty garments.

Decorate Your Space

Adding a bit of wallpaper or painting the walls inside your closet can make this space so much livelier! Closets are generally where we hide our messy things, yet we have to go into every day. Why not enjoy the experience of getting dressed for the day by decorating your space.

Put Your Bags in Cubbies

Your handbags are something special, no matter the price tag. If you care for each one in the right way, it can last for a very long time. Try dedicating a space in your closet specifically for your handbags with individual cubbies. You can buy acrylic shelf dividers from LAclosetdesign.com to create a space for each bag. It’ll make your closet visually appealing and keep the bags from falling over allowing them to keep their intended shape.

Throw or give away clothes you haven’t worn in over two years to help keep your closet from busting out.

I call it the double blessing. I am blessed with a sense of order, and sometimes discovering “old friends” I had forgotten about. Best of all, someone else (in need) is blessed by my reorganizing.
AND, those trouser just a size or two too small…pass them on and REWARD yourself with new ones when you achieve that desired waist size!! It’s a win/win!!
