It takes only one of these soft eye-shadow tones to upgrade your makeup, but as actress Amanda Seyfried showed at the Dear John premiere, they can look even prettier together. I like the pairing of luminous mauve and gunmetal shades on her lids: It’s such a great, unexpected alternative to classic brown, and makes blue eyes look even brighter.

Red lips had a MAJOR moment at NY Fashion Week. Here’s one of my favorite takes on the trend: rich, punch-bright lips with a dazzlingly glossy finish. If the rest of your look stays minimalist (clean makeup, slicked back hair), the effect can be truly irresistible.

How to create the look: Outline and fill in your mouth with a red lip pencil like Motives Lip Crayon in Retro Red. Top with one coat of red lipstick, blot, and finish with some gloss, like Motives Full Color Lip Shine in Flame. (Then tuck the gloss in your bag for touch-ups.)

When you change your hair color (a la the newly-brunettes Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie) do you change your makeup, too? I find that it’s a terrific opportunity to experiment with lip, cheek and eye-shadow colors. (Your foundation, which needs to match your skin tone, should always stay a constant!!) Anyway, here’s my rule of thumb, which I learned from a makeup artist-friend: If you’re taking your hair in a brighter direction – strawberry blonde, coppery red or rich chestnut – a shift to softer, neutral shades on your eyes and lips can look amazing. (I love our bestselling Motives Lip Shine in Candlelight, $10.50.) Alternately, if you’re going blonder or darker, you can get away with bolder, more dramatic hues: red lips or a lush smoky eye.

I always take my hair a little darker in the winter. Am I wrong for feeling like, even in Miami, we should have a change of seasons, too?

It’s the first day of February! Can you believe it? I was doing my makeup this morning and I realized that as the day speeds up I just end up completely forgetting about my face! Does that happen to anyone else? This is the exact reason why I love the look of berry-stained lips. Done properly, the deep, sexy effect can last till I go to bed (or beyond), with no touch-ups required. I stained my lips this morning and they are still looking good!

The technique: Apply a wine-toned lipstick – like Motives Rich Formula Lipstick in  Berry Sexy – blot with tissue, and repeat. You can add a touch of clear or pink gloss on top for bring it all to life. If the effect looks a little soft and imprecise (like you’ve just had a raspberry popsicle), so much the better :)

The rules for everyone – no matter what your brow shape:

1. This sounds obvious but bears repeating: Don’t pluck too much or too often. The general rule is to shape your brows thoroughly every 6 weeks; in between, simply tweeze away any errant stragglers as needed.

2. Pluck one hair at a time, then step back to check your work in the mirror before going in for more.

3. Aim for full, natural arches – always more youthful than severe brows.

If you have sparse brows:

4. Invest in a brow powder-and-wax combo like Motives Essential Brow Kit. Dip a brush into the wax and then tap it against the brow powder to pick up the color. Go with a lighter taupe-y shade to start; you can always go back and intensify the effect if you like.

5. Using short, feathery brush-strokes, define the outer half of each brow first. If you need more definition, color the inner half of the arch, too.

Your turn: Do you usually define your brows or not? And are you brave enough to shape them yourself or do you go to a pro?

Could actress Minka Kelly get any prettier? I was thrilled to hear about her engagement to Yankees star Derek Jeter. With her creamy skin and lush lashes, she always looks out-and-out gorgeous. To capture the effect, it’s smart to layer your mascara. Apply a coat of Motives Lustrafy Mascara to define your lashes and make them look thicker and fuller. Then, to set the effect, add a coat of Motives Lustrafy Waterproof Mascara on top. (This is an especially good trick for weddings or any other event where you might get a little choked up and teary-eyed. Minka, are you listening?)

I love a touch of bright blush in winter – that instant glow makes everyone look healthy and fresh. The secret to giving powder blush extra staying power and keeping the color true? First, dust a tiny bit of translucent powder on your cheeks to form a base. Next, run a big, soft, slightly angled brush over the pressed blush, tap off the excess, and swirl the color onto the apples of your cheeks. (To find the apples, just smile – it’s the plumpest part.)

And if you’re feeling adventurous, the angle on this brush is perfect for contouring. Just remember, don’t get too close to the nose or temples – sure signs of a blush overload!

Lips in a magenta hue were seen on all of the models at the Marc by Marc Jacobs spring 2010 ready-to-wear fashion show – paired with equally as vivid over-sized accessories!

If you love the pop of color but want to dial it down a bit, ditch the other bright pieces and just focus on the lips.
