Today has been a fabulous day — not only am I getting ready to receive an award at fashion Miami, but a few of my friends just emailed me this great post from Beautysnob.com.
It turned out to be especially helpful — considering it’s about Motives® by Loren Ridinger Lustrafy High Definition Mascara (which I’m planning to wear tonight)!

Karen Elson is one of my favorite models. Off duty, she runs an amazing vintage shop called Venus and Mars: The Showroom in Nashville, where she lives with her husband Jack White of the White Stripes and is currently recording her first album.
So to say that Karen Elson is cool is an understatement. And her boundary-pushing personality plays a huge part in her beauty picks as well. Here, she manages to pull off two seemingly at odds shades—pale orange eyeshadow and pinkish-red lips—and makes it look simple. The feel is certainly quirky, but as long as you go easy on the mascara and blush the end result has a pretty, I-make-my-own-rules vibe.

It takes only one of these soft eye-shadow tones to upgrade your makeup, but as actress Amanda Seyfried showed at the Dear John premiere, they can look even prettier together. I like the pairing of luminous mauve and gunmetal shades on her lids: It’s such a great, unexpected alternative to classic brown, and makes blue eyes look even brighter.

When you change your hair color (a la the newly-brunettes Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie) do you change your makeup, too? I find that it’s a terrific opportunity to experiment with lip, cheek and eye-shadow colors. (Your foundation, which needs to match your skin tone, should always stay a constant!!) Anyway, here’s my rule of thumb, which I learned from a makeup artist-friend: If you’re taking your hair in a brighter direction – strawberry blonde, coppery red or rich chestnut – a shift to softer, neutral shades on your eyes and lips can look amazing. (I love our bestselling Motives Lip Shine in Candlelight, $10.50.) Alternately, if you’re going blonder or darker, you can get away with bolder, more dramatic hues: red lips or a lush smoky eye.
I always take my hair a little darker in the winter. Am I wrong for feeling like, even in Miami, we should have a change of seasons, too?

I was completely blown away by Emily Blunt’s soft, feminine hair and makeup at the Golden Globes. To be honest, I barely recognized her until her name was announced on the red carpet. I think we’re all used to seeing her work an edgier look, and well, it turns out that romantic and pretty suits her just fine. It takes guts to stick with one eye shadow shade—especially one this ultra-light—but she really pulled it off without losing depth at all. A couple of things to remember if you’re trying to do this at home:
Start with a good base, like Motives Eye Base. When you’re using a single eye shadow shade, any caking at all will be even more noticeable!
Pick something sheer with a bit of sparkle, which will add the dimension you’re missing out. I love Motives Pressed Eye Shadow in Studio 54 for something like this.
Finally, piling on too much liner or mascara will throw off the whole effect. A thin line along your top lid using Motives new Liquid Liner is all you need.

The rules for everyone – no matter what your brow shape:
1. This sounds obvious but bears repeating: Don’t pluck too much or too often. The general rule is to shape your brows thoroughly every 6 weeks; in between, simply tweeze away any errant stragglers as needed.
2. Pluck one hair at a time, then step back to check your work in the mirror before going in for more.
3. Aim for full, natural arches – always more youthful than severe brows.
If you have sparse brows:
4. Invest in a brow powder-and-wax combo like Motives Essential Brow Kit. Dip a brush into the wax and then tap it against the brow powder to pick up the color. Go with a lighter taupe-y shade to start; you can always go back and intensify the effect if you like.
5. Using short, feathery brush-strokes, define the outer half of each brow first. If you need more definition, color the inner half of the arch, too.

Motives Essential Brow Kit $29.95
Your turn: Do you usually define your brows or not? And are you brave enough to shape them yourself or do you go to a pro?

Could actress Minka Kelly get any prettier? I was thrilled to hear about her engagement to Yankees star Derek Jeter. With her creamy skin and lush lashes, she always looks out-and-out gorgeous. To capture the effect, it’s smart to layer your mascara. Apply a coat of Motives Lustrafy Mascara to define your lashes and make them look thicker and fuller. Then, to set the effect, add a coat of Motives Lustrafy Waterproof Mascara on top. (This is an especially good trick for weddings or any other event where you might get a little choked up and teary-eyed. Minka, are you listening?)

It’s still a month away, but the fashion industry is full-speed ahead towards Fall 2010 Fashion Week, and the name on every designer’s lips is that of Frida Gustavsson. The 16-year-old Swedish model caught the eye of every big label that comes to mind: Fendi, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, and the list goes on and on. One look at this photo and it’s easy to see why she’s got everyone so captivated.
I love the way she used just a little bit of burnt, earthy red shadow around the inner corners of her eyelids—it opens up her whole face. If you’re trying this out for yourself, the key thing to remember is that a little goes a long way. Too much red—or too bright of a shade—will leave you looking like a zombie! Just blend a tiny bit around the corner of your eye, and line with a pale pencil, like taupe or light brown. And viola! big, stunning eyes in minutes.
