Viktor and Rolf brought backstage front-and-center this season with designers Rolf Snoeren and Viktor Horsting planting themselves mid-stage at the show and styling models as they came down the runway. It was a well-rehearsed display that felt more like a performance piece than actual backstage craziness. But none-the-less, it was fun to watch and something the ladies over at The Cut were able to catch on camera. I love that you can see the mix-and-match capabilities of their clothes in action. My only question is: What was going on backstage if everyone was on stage?

Solid-color dresses ruled at the Academy Awards – just look at Twilight stars Anna Kendrick and Kristen Stewart. I lean towards one color gowns myself, but I couldn’t take my eyes off of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s strapless, Impressionist-print sheath by Dries Van Noten. Just the fact that she wore a print set her apart, and now I feel inspired to step out of the box with my clothing choices next time I go to an event!

Whose evening style is most similar to your own?

Paris Fashion Week is usually my favorite stop on the month-long fashion show circuit – I guess I subscribe to the “saving the best for last” philosophy. But honestly, I haven’t been blown away. Don’t get me wrong though, there have certainly been a few high points… my favorite so far being the introduction of nude and navy as the new preferred palette for stripes.
Stella McCartney vs. Isabel Marant
Both Stella McCartney and Isabel Marant did tops in this print that they paired with ankle-length skinny pants and pointy-toe stilettos. But Stella McCartney stuck with a classic aesthetic, while Isabel Marant went for rocker chic. Which mood would you go for?

Sarah Jessica Parker’s lemon-yellow column dress (by Chanel Couture) had a polarizing effect at the Oscars: Everyone I’ve spoken to either loved it or hated it. (For the record, I’m pro Parker.) The bodice could have been slightly more form fitting, but the neckline is interesting and feminine. What do you think?

If John Galliano’s models were wearing clothes, I didn’t notice. I was too mesmerized, perplexed, and completely blindsided by what was happening on their heads. There were oversized hats of every caliber: big, floppy mushroom hats, warrior princess hats, genie hats, and some sort of feathery-looking tree hat. Anyway, it was strange—even for John Galliano. Take a look…

Leather skirts in every form—mini, pleated, pencil—have been popping up since New York Fashion Week kicked off a month ago. But it was the Parisians that figured out how to wear them best. The winning combination: A soft lace blouse and a fitted leather skirt. The look is tough without being hard, sexy without being girly, and definitely something I want to start wearing now.

How do you feel about the unexpected pairing?

Apparently come fall, we can lay to rest the idea that mixing-and-matching every print we own—polka dots with plaids, florals with stripes—is the only way to dress. Instead we should focus our attention on dressing in one color, and one color only.
In theory, the idea may sound refreshingly simple, but there are definitely some pitfalls to avoid. The first, being caught in a single shade head-to-toe, like say, an eggplant top with an eggplant skirt and shoes. The effect of this, as you can guess, would resemble a certain giant purple dinosaur. Here, three tricks to pairing shades like a pro and avoiding being compared to a well-known cartoon animal:
- Mix up tones within the same color family. Visualize a color spectrum and pick shades at opposite ends, like a baby blue with a cobalt.
- Stick with two or three shades. Anything more gets too complicated and busy.
- Layer on the texture: pair tweeds with sequins, chiffon with leather, and more. This keeps things interesting.
I recommend picking your favorite color, any color, and going wild!

Last week I raved about three of my favorite new fall trends fresh off the runway: calf-length dresses, winter capes, and wide-leg trousers. And most of you already know this about me, but once I see something I love I have to find it online immediately. So I started scouring the web and though it took some digging I found them all. And here they are!
Spiegel Animal Print Calf-length Dress $69
Max Studio Caped Raincoat $128
Net-a-Porter, Adam wide-leg trouser $295
