Notes from the Tents, Paris: Switching Stages

Viktor and Rolf brought backstage front-and-center this season with designers Rolf Snoeren and Viktor Horsting planting themselves mid-stage at the show and styling models as they came down the runway. It was a well-rehearsed display that felt more like a performance piece than actual backstage craziness. But none-the-less, it was fun to watch and something the ladies over at " target="_blank">The Cut were able to catch on camera. I love that you can see the mix-and-match capabilities of their clothes in action. My only question is: What was going on backstage if everyone was on stage?

Solid-color dresses ruled at the Academy Awards – just look at Twilight stars Anna Kendrick and Kristen Stewart. I lean towards one color gowns myself, but I couldn’t take my eyes off of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s strapless, Impressionist-print sheath by Dries Van Noten. Just the fact that she wore a print set her apart, and now I feel inspired to step out of the box with my clothing choices next time I go to an event!

Shop Smarter: The Right Stripe for Your Shape

I mentioned stripes yesterday because of Paris Fashion Week, but stripes are also huge for spring this season. I really love this look, and the trick is to make sure that your stripes flow in a direction that flatters your shape. They can really work wonders in the optical illusion department if you get them right.

To minimize hips, look for dresses with horizontal stripes on the bodice, and a solid-color skirt.

To streamline your torso, go for vertical stripes up top, and horizontal stripes below.

To make broad shoulders look narrower, opt for stripes that start just above your chest.

Notes from the Tents, Paris: Seeing Stripes

Paris Fashion Week is usually my favorite stop on the month-long fashion show circuit – I guess I subscribe to the “saving the best for last” philosophy. But honestly, I haven’t been blown away. Don’t get me wrong though, there have certainly been a few high points… my favorite so far being the introduction of nude and navy as the new preferred palette for stripes.

Stella McCartney vs. Isabel Marant

Both Stella McCartney and Isabel Marant did tops in this print that they paired with ankle-length skinny pants and pointy-toe stilettos. But Stella McCartney stuck with a classic aesthetic, while Isabel Marant went for rocker chic. Which mood would you go for?

Fashion Stumper of the Week: SJP in Chanel Couture

Sarah Jessica Parker’s lemon-yellow column dress (by Chanel Couture) had a polarizing effect at the Oscars: Everyone I’ve spoken to either loved it or hated it. (For the record, I’m pro Parker.) The bodice could have been slightly more form fitting, but the neckline is interesting and feminine. What do you think?

Exciting Information About This Week’s “Fashion Miami”

Good morning everyone!! I have some great news about my plans for the rest of this week! Today through Sunday, March 14th is “Fashion Miami” here in Miami Beach – Fall/Winter runway shows and fashionable events will be taking over the Miami Design District. Chrysler has become the official sponsor of “Fashion Miami” and will be presenting the Fashion Group International Award on Friday to four influential leaders on the Miami fashion scene, of which I am humbled to say I am one of the recipients! Check out the three others – such an honor to be in the same group as them!
