Shop Smarter – Why Navy is More Flattering than Black

March 31st // 3 Comments

When it comes to clothes, black is a major hit for many reasons: It’s slimming and sophisticated, versatile and low-key. But navy blue does all that – and goes one better. It’s less harsh than black and thus more flattering to most skin tones, especially if you’re over 35.* My favorite thing? It offers the perfect counterpoint to spring’s bright accessories and jackets.

* This rule goes for makeup, too: At a certain age, it’s a good idea to trade your black kohl eye liner for a chocolate, navy or deep gray – it’s a softer, more forgiving effect.

Which alternative works best on you?

Love,

Loren

Steal This Look: The Peplum Dress on Demi Moore

March 24th // 2 Comments

I was recently visiting friends at the Chateau Marmont, and –as usual in youth-obsessed L.A.– talk turned to Demi Moore. “Can’t anyone find out who her plastic surgeon is?” asked one of them. “No, it can’t just be plastic surgery – I think it’s truly genetic,” said another. “It’s possible… I heard that her grandmother lived to 90 and never got a gray hair!” said a third. “Or it could be the cute young husband.”

Anyway, whatever Demi’s secret is, it’s working. She always looks completely blissed out these days, and I love her style, too. The figure-flattering cocktail dress she’s wearing here is sharp and amazingly practical: The pretty peplum lets you enjoy a few extra hors d’oeuvres without having to worry about holding your tummy in. (Okay, not that Demi has a tummy!)

How to get the look:

Who else do you think is aging backwards, and what’s your theory on it?

Spring Trend: Bright Coral Dresses (as seen on Iman and Kristen Stewart)

March 16th // 1 Comment

I wrote earlier about how much I love a peach hue – and then I saw these pictures of bright, almost neon dresses and now I love this color, too! Wearing a more vivid peach – like coral – is like placing a sunset in the middle of the room. You can see how the color’s range can compliment various skin tones:

Kristen Stewart at The Runaways premiere; read more at TheDailyBeast.com

Will you be stocking up on coral dresses come spring?

Ruffled Wrap Skirts are Suddenly Chic… and Sexy

February 6th // 7 Comments

Don’t you love it when two of your favorite things come together in a fresh and exciting way? That’s how I feel about Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ duet, a tank top and a fur hat (at least in the J.Crew catalog) and wrap skirts and ruffles – which have come together to form one of the prettiest trends this spring! This dress from Preen ($350 at Net-a-Porter.com) has a carefree, bohemian feel – and the ruffles give it a gorgeous dose of softness.

Are you going to try this trend when the temp spikes?

Lots of love,
