Solid-color dresses ruled at the Academy Awards – just look at Twilight stars Anna Kendrick and Kristen Stewart. I lean towards one color gowns myself, but I couldn’t take my eyes off of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s strapless, Impressionist-print sheath by Dries Van Noten. Just the fact that she wore a print set her apart, and now I feel inspired to step out of the box with my clothing choices next time I go to an event!

One of the freshest trends for spring is lace – lace suits, lace dresses, lace tops – even lacy leggings. Cut in very unfussy, womanly shapes, the dresses don’t look even slightly bridal, as one might fear, but are instead insanely sexy and romantic. A case in point from Dolce & Gabbana:

A satin party dress is an essential in any party-loving woman’s wardrobe. And there are two ways to go here. One is the edgy, futuristic route: a clean, non-fitted shape in a stiffer satin. Just be sure to show some leg or an expanse of bare back, to bring in some sex appeal. Alternately, you can go for the more popular option and wear a slinkier, fitted satin dress, which has sex appeal to spare. The key here is to get high-quality satin that offers a bit of stretch and support – and, if necessary, to wear some type of smoothing Spanx item underneath. I especially love the satin sheath dresses by designer L’Wren Scott (Mick Jagger’s girlfriend and a former Vanity Fair stylist). What could look more modern and flattering?
