Here are two words you must have in your fashion vocabulary: monochromatic and ombre. Keeping all of your clothing and accessories in the same color family adds an instant dose of chic, while a shaded ombre effect is just plain interesting (and takes the does this match? conundrum out of the equation). Push the look one step further with this season’s trendy bright colors and use blue to chase away the winter gray.

My friend Jean, who is a paragon of city-girl cool, just met me for dinner wearing the most fabulous ombre cardigan. Paired with skinny black Helmut Lang pants, a white tank and black Christian Louboutin pumps, the effect was super-glam yet utterly laid-back – and the cardigan made the outfit.
