Adore this look on Emma Stone! The Help actress attended the National Board of Review Awards Gala in NYC last night wearing J. Mendel and ruby red lipstick. The pop of color complimented her simple updo and added a touch of glam to her neutral, monochromatic dress. Stunning! There were two big lip-color trends at the shows: daring red-pink (cue Best Actress nominees Sandra Bullock and Vera Farmiga) and ever-so-soft, glossy mauve (see Rachel McAdams and Anna Kendrick). Each tone makes a huge difference in its own beautiful way.

A decade since her last album, Sade’s Soldier of Love is No. 1 on the charts. The singer hasn’t aged a day, and neither has her iconic style. And I love how her signature red lipstick/wrapped ponytail/skinny-gold-hoop earrings look works for day or night.

Red lips had a MAJOR moment at NY Fashion Week. Here’s one of my favorite takes on the trend: rich, punch-bright lips with a dazzlingly glossy finish. If the rest of your look stays minimalist (clean makeup, slicked back hair), the effect can be truly irresistible.

How to create the look: Outline and fill in your mouth with a red lip pencil like Motives Lip Crayon in Retro Red. Top with one coat of red lipstick, blot, and finish with some gloss, like Motives Full Color Lip Shine in Flame. (Then tuck the gloss in your bag for touch-ups.)

Think about it: If you star in a hit drama set during the 1960s, the last thing you want to look like in real life is retro. Herein lies the dilemma of “Mad Men” actress January Jones, who makes it her business to wear modern-looking makeup in different, daring ways. For the Golden Globes, she opted for stunning matte-red lips, a clean eye and major lashes.

Deceptively, the real trick to this look is getting the skin just right. You’ll want to use a light foundation like Motives Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation and — this is key — apply it with a brush only where needed. If you have great skin and want even sheerer coverage, wet the brush before you use it.

Spring beauty trend to wear now!

Dolce & Gabbana spun a wonderfully sexy, Southern-Italian vibe into their spring collection. In addition to the curvy suits and pretty lace dresses on their runway, we also fell for the models’ gorgeous ruby-red lipstick. Makeup guru Pat McGrath treated them to a mix of Dolce & Gabbana’s Devil, Dahlia and Ultra lip colors — sold exclusively at Saks Fifth Avenue in the U.S. Worn with otherwise clean makeup and a hint of shimmer, the effect is incredibly elegant — and so pretty:
