Women’s Beauty Tips – First Rate Beauty from the First Lady

July 16th // Comment Here

Since taking office, Michelle Obama’s every fashion choice has been documented and, in a lot of instances, copied. But I actually think her beauty picks have been just as inspiring. Mrs. Obama isn’t afraid to experiment—check out the great eye shadow pairing she’s wearing in this picture! But, as any risk taker can attest, making an experiment work is just as much about knowing when to play it safe. Here, a step-by-step guide to making the First Lady’s glowing, glamorous look your own.

Step 1:
Start with Motives Liquid Powder Mineral Foundation in the correct shade for your skin type. Brush on lightly and be sure to blend evenly. I always use my finger around the nose and along the jaw line, where it’s easy for smudges to form. Let the foundation sink in for a few minutes for a nice dewy effect.

Step 2:
Highlight those cheekbones! Nothing works better than a smile when you’re applying blush. So using Motives Pressed Blush in Runway and a grin dust on a thin layer at an upward angle along your cheeks, concentrating a majority of the color directly below the middle of your eye. Blending is key; you don’t want any defined strokes, or, even worse, circles!

Step 3:
Use Motives Pressed Eye Shadow in Pink Diamond, to draw attention to your strong brow line, while opening up the eye. Then apply a darker-but-complementary shade, like Motives Pressed Eye Shadow in Midnight, along your upper eyelid. You want to be pretty heavy handed with the application directly along the lid, and then use a brush to blend up and away from the corner of your eye. You should stop just as the darker shade begins to touch the lighter on the outside.

Step 4:
Apply a thick line of Motives Kohl Eyeliner in Amethyst along the upper lid, but leave the bottom unlined. This is one of those places where you can take a risk with your color selection, but balance that risk by only lining one part of your eye.

Step 5:
Finally, pick a nude-but-not-matte shade for your lips, like Motives Rich Color Lipstick in Pink Sand. You want them to take a back burner to the drama of your eyes.

Loren

Women’s Haircare Solutions – Get Celeb Perfect Hair While Traveling

July 16th // Comment Here

I’m happy to report that I have finally found the key to great on-the-go hair. And the answer, quite frankly, is far simpler than I would have ever assumed. Now I’m used to packing a whole slew of hair products and tools in an attempt to foil whatever hair-tastrophy happens to await me at my destination—humidity, hard water, bad shower pressure. I’m sure you can all relate! But it turns out I really only needed two things: Aveda’s Hang Straight product and TruLift Pro Mini Cordless Straightening Iron. This little iron is only 7.5 inches long, but manages to heat up in a matter of minutes and stays hot for half an hour without ever needing to be plugged in, which means you can use it on a plane or in your car. Its small size plays a huge part of what makes this such a genius travel tool. Besides taking up minimal suitcase space, the tiny plates allow for more styling variations. Get Camilla-Belle-pin-straight hair by pulling the iron straight, or for face-framing pieces use a more rounded motion. Plus, the ionic plates help to lock moisture in and create shine, negating any need for a finishing product. Seriously, 5-minute hair is finally a realistic goal!

Women’s Beauty Tips – The Twisted Facts About Braids

July 9th // Comment Here

As much as we all love the arrival of warm weather, I for one do not look forward to the frizzy, unmanageable hair days that inevitably come along with it. The easiest—and cutest—remedy I’ve found for unruly summer hair are braids. They have that fresh-off-the-beach appeal. But they’re trickier than they first appear, and not all techniques are flattering for everyone. Here, a helpful breakdown on picking the right braids for you (with a little modeling help from some celebrities who wore them best).

A Coiffed Jessica Alba:

This face-framing look works best on someone with strong-but-small, pronounced features and an oval face shape. Notice that the small French braid mimics the exact angle of Jessica’s jaw line creating a beautiful sense of balance and bringing the eye directly to the intricate bun at the nape of her neck. Be sure to avoid tight braids, which—besides being deeply uncomfortable—will pull your scalp in a very noticeable way.

Emmy Rossum’s Side Pony:

Braids are tricky for someone with a deep-set hairline. Starting them too close to your face will only draw attention to that fact. So instead, leave the hair closest to your forehead free, and gather the hair on top of your head to create a large, loose French braid that will go across your scalp. The look is supposed to be a bit messy, so don’t worry about it looking perfect.

Blake Lively’s Peek-a-Boo Braids:

This is the best trick in the book, and, as an added bonus, is universally flattering. Say you want to leave your hair down for a perfectly tousled effect, but there are a few frizzy, fly-aways that just won’t stay put. Braid them! Start about an inch away from your scalp, and do a tight braid all the way down. You can even use the braid to hold other hair in place.

Mary Kate Olsen’s Milkmaid:

A round face and lots of hair are necessary to pull off this tricky style. You really want the braid to be loose and messy here. Anything too perfect is going to feel costume-y. Once you’ve adhered the braid to the top of your head, make sure to tousle the surrounding pieces a bit. Otherwise it will look out of place. And definitely leave a few face-framing fly-aways.

Women’s Beauty Tips – The Scents of Summer

June 18th // Comment Here

These fresh new fragrances embody everything I love about summer: subtle florals mixed with a little grass, a little fruit, but nothing overpowering.

If ever a bottle design could be described as sexy, this would be the one with its bold, magnified curves. But where the bottle is certainly in-your-face, the scent itself is a soft blend of rose and baby powder.

Yes. This bottle is shaped like a mini cocktail shaker. And the scent, a blend of melon and black violet, is just as playful.laugh with me leeleeLaugh with me LeeLee by Benefit, $36 at Benefit Cosmetics

The complicated mix of peonies, freesia, and white lilies in this graffiti-splayed bottle is a little intense at first, but after a few minutes the sweet, earthy undertones balance that out.

Women’s Beauty Tips – Sexy, eco-fragrances you’ll love

June 6th // 1 Comment

They’ve long been known for turning out the most gorgeously scented, eco-friendly candles, soaps and drawer liners, so it’s no surprise that the Soap and Paper Factory’s recently launched Solid Perfumes feel similarly decadent. A mix of pure jojoba, beeswax and fragrance, the fragrances are especially brilliant for chemically-sensitive types: The good-for-you formulas contain no alcohol, phthalates, parabens or petrochemicals. I especially love the Jasmine , Rosewood and Orange Blossom scents – they’re nicely subtle, summer-perfect and only $18 each.
